The mind creates an enchanted dell.

It’s funny how the mind affects the way you view things.
I’ve walked past this place a hundred times during the day when, in reality, it looks nothing like this. But each time, in my head, this is what I see.
The spot always reminds me of an enchanted dell — somewhere that little imps or spirits might dwell, if you go in search of them! I decided to try and recreate what I imagined into this scene, by photographing the location at night!

Reminisce and Rebel

It took me a while to pinpoint the feeling I got from this scene: It had been a day of struggle, of clashing weather patterns and changing moods, and it ended with the sunset fighting through the clouds.

I sat there, waiting to see who would win — the cloud bank or the rays of sunshine — and for almost an hour they duked it out! (And holy cow, it was cold!)

Somehow, the scene brought to mind something coming to an end, but rebelling against it and not wanting to go without a fight.

Close in Peace

Close in Peace

I never quite feel satisfied, leaving a place when I have not gotten a photograph I like — it always feels as if something is unfinished.
This was my experience on a recent trip to Monterey, CA, until the very last moment as the sun was setting. Everything became still, except for the swirling tide. The birds settled on their rocks, an amazing color came into the sky and I set up this long-exposure photograph!

Immersive Landscape

Immersive Landscape

I love that moment, being out in nature, when suddenly everything else falls away except the sights, sounds and smells which surround you. The stresses and hang-ups of modern life are replaced by a heightened awareness of the light falling on the ocean, the wind in the trees or the smell of wet earth or tree-bark baking in the sun.
That all-encompassing experience is difficult to reproduce in photographs, but the closest I can get is with my giant panoramas. This one can be printed up to 6 feet wide and displayed as one long image; or in sections, mimicking a scene through several windows.

Perception

Perception

Reflections have always fascinated me. Their source, in reality, is apparent, but their translation through the medium of water makes them something entirely different — mysterious and open to interpretation.
