Close in Peace

I never quite feel satisfied, leaving a place when I have not gotten a photograph I like — it always feels as if something is unfinished.
This was my experience on a recent trip to Monterey, CA, until the very last moment as the sun was setting. Everything became still, except for the swirling tide. The birds settled on their rocks, an amazing color came into the sky and I set up this long-exposure photograph!

I find that I am often drawn to scenes which transport me elsewhere. I remember watching Mary Poppins a child and wishing I too could jump into a painting and disappear into another time or place for a while!
In making images, I try to impart that ‘other-worldliness’ or create a window to somewhere else. When I saw this scene, shrouded in mist, it reminded me of a memory – something from the past, which I was fortunate enough to get a fleeting glimpse of.

Looking at landscapes receding into fog always reminds me of the uncertain nature of life. Sometimes you can see a few hundred yards and sometimes just a step or two – but all we can do, to see what’s ahead, is continue on.
